You never know what you're going to see at The Zoo - and that's never truer than at Wakatobi!

Recently, a young hawksbill was caught on film, enjoying a snack of fresh sponge at the dive site known as The Zoo. Found in tropical waters in coral reefs, rocky areas, lagoons and shallow coastal areas, hawksbills are classifed as critically endangered.

Hawksbills are recognisable by their strong, bird-like 'beak' that's perfectly suited for crushing, biting, and tearing food. They love a sea sponge - an adult is estimated to eat more than 450kg of fast-growing sponges every year - but also snack on sea invertebrates like sea jellies, molluscs, fish, crustaceans, algae and other plants and animals.
