Soundings: Diving for stories in the beckoning sea
Kennedy Warne's love affair with the underwater world now available as an audiobook

One of New Zealand's most vivid and fascinating books on the underwater world is now available as an audiobook.
Longlisted for the 2024 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards, Soundings draws on more than 20 years of Kennedy Warne's fieldwork for National Geographic.
Perhaps the closest a human being comes to visiting another planet is to descend into the sea. In Soundings, the founding editor of New Zealand Geographic connects his lifelong exploration of the underwater world with a global story of humanity's relationship with the sea.
Kennedy shares experiences that range from diving with harp seals under the sea ice of the Gulf of St Lawrence, to following the legendary 'sardine run' along South Africa's Wild Coast; from watching turret-building ghost crabs in Arabia to witnessing the impact of dynamite fishing in the Philippines; from swimming with crocodiles in the Okavango Delta to finding seahorses on the Western Cape.

From myriad underwater expeditions has come a much wider conversation: How can we care for and reconnect with teh oceans around us?
We have a copy of the Soundings audiobook to give away. To be in to win, email editor@divepacific.co.nz with 'Soundings' in the subject line. Competition closes April 20, 2026.
