Most divers already know there's nothing that makes you feel quite as alive as when you're in the ocean. Studies have shown that time in and near the ocean reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood and social interaction, and leads to better sleep. In short, being in and around 'blue spaces' - saltwater and freshwater environments - is a great way of improving your mental health.

Seaweek, which runs this week, is Aotearoa New Zealand's annual celebration of the sea, coordinated by Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC) in Long Bay on Auckland's North Shore. Thanks to a team of volunteers, it brings people together to celebrate the wonders of the ocean. Kiwis of all ages across the country are taking part in over 100 events, including exhibitions, competitions and shows.

Seaweek teaches kids about the importance of protecting our oceans - and it's good for their mental health too
