Many scuba divers have long given up on snorkelling, believing the best sights were to be found deep in the ocean, way beyond the shallows. However, a snorkel expedition, just off the jetty into the house reef, reveals a vibrant, magical land.

Since Wakatobi Resort's conception in 1996, the founder, Lorenz Mader, had one goal: to protect the reef system. Since then he has worked with local leaders, establishing reef lease agreements that provide sustainable income for communities while strictly protecting the ecosystem. This has resulted in a flourishing marine protected area (MPA), one of its only kind in the world, reserved exclusively for underwater recreation.
