So far, it's not been a great summer for diver safety in New Zealand. New Zealand Underwater Association President Tom Karstensen, along with Rob Hewitt from Water Safety New Zealand, spoke to RNZ about the best ways to stay safe in the water.

"Hazards can be completely different in different parts of New Zealand," says Tom. "If you're diving somewhere you don't know, you should be getting local knowledge - reaching out to a dive club or shop, or talking to people who know the area - to learn about local hazards and weather conditions."
