Dive Pacific evolves to digital-only model
The media and editorial branch of the New Zealand Underwater Association embraces online success

The New Zealand Underwater Association (NZUA) would like to announce that Dive Pacific, the organisation’s editorial and media branch, will move from a print magazine and website to a digital-only platform.
The decision to cease publishing the annual print version of Dive Pacific to focus on our digital offering has been taken as a result of the brand achieving significant online growth over the past 18 months. The well-publicised difficulties associated with producing print magazines was also a factor.
“It’s no secret that print media across New Zealand and the world has faced some significant challenges, with many platforms reverting to a digital-only model. Given our position as the country’s recognised leading not-for-profit organisation promoting and advocating safe and enjoyable underwater activities, NZUA has made the proactive and strategic decision to follow suit,” says NZUA President Tom Karstensen. “This will enable us to provide up-to-date news content, and timely collaborations with our advertising partners, for readers and members.
“Going forward, we will be focusing our capital investment on growing and curating the digital side of the business, and growing the value proposition for our advertisers and the diving, underwater sports and dive tourism sectors. Many in the New Zealand underwater community already look to the Dive Pacific website and social media pages for inspiration and news in the marine environment, so it makes practical and financial sense to double down on our position and provide an up-to-date platform for all NZUA and Dive Pacific content.”
The Dive Pacific website, which will continue as a self-publishing platform, has seen a significant increase in traffic. Our views are up 731 per cent year on year, with active users up 378 per cent - almost quadruple the number from the previous year. Our fortnightly email newsletters and social media platforms show our audience is highly engaged, especially on content around our three main strategic pillars: safety, underwater sports and environment.
