Earlier this year, celebrated wildlife photographer Doug Allen showcased his work to multiple sold-out events around the South Island of New Zealand. Doug had an incredible time travelling the country, sharing stories from a lifetime spent exploring some of the world's most remote and remarkable places. He loved meeting so many like-minded people along the way, and a tour became an unforgettable experience, both for Doug, and for his son Liam, who organised and managed his dad's tour.

Tragically, just two weeks after leaving New Zealand, Doug passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm while on a climbing trip in Pokhara, Nepal. The news came as a tremendous shock - Doug and Liam had already begun discussing plans for a North Island tour, and were excited about the possibility of bringing the show to more communities around the country.

To honour his father's life, Liam is organising A Night To Remember, a special fundraising event, at Searchlight Brewery in Queenstown on Saturday July 18th, 2026. Beginning at 3pm, the afternoon and evening will be a celebration of live music, community and joyful remembrance. It offers an opportunity for people to come together, share stories, and raise a glass to those we have lost.

Doug's travels took him to some of the most extreme places on the globe - especially underwater

Whether you attended Life Behind The Lens, knew Doug personally, or simply want to be part of the event, everyone is welcome. Some of Doug's photographic prints will be available, and local businesses have donated prizes for a fundraising raffle. Proceeds from the event will support New Zealand charities, including LiveOcean, a marine conservation charity working to restore and protect our oceans.

"It felt like a particularly fitting cause given Dad's lifelong passion for the natural world, and his belief that healthy oceans are essential for the future of our planet," says Liam.

Doug's work took him all over the world - here he's in Chagos, in the Indian Ocean.
